In Berlin-Brandenburg the working hours can be organised more flexibly than in the western federal states. The average collectively-agreed workweek in manufacturing is 35.7 hours in the western federal s tates. By contrast, in large parts of the German capital region 38 hours per week are worked under collective agreements - and the actual workweek frequently amount s to 40 hours or more.

Working hours in Berlin-Brandenburg are thus also clearly longer tha n in Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden, Norway), the Netherlands, Belgium or France. They are almost on the same level as in Spain or Austria. The working hours in the new EU member countries in Central Eastern Europe are at 40 to 42 hours, with , however, a sub stantially higher number of strike days. From 1994 to 2003 Poland recorded an annual average of nine workdays lost to strikes per each 1000 people employed, in Hungary it was even 23 days. In Germany the number of lost workdays in the same period was only four, in Brandenburg one.
